Donkey Pronouns: Void Descriptions?

چکیده

In the traditional E-type approach to d-(onkey)-pronouns, these pronouns are interpreted as definite descriptions that contain a bound i-(ndividual)-variable (Evans, 1977; Cooper, 1979; Heim, 1990). Elbourne (2001, 2002); Büring (2004) have recently proposed a variant of the E-type approach which dispenses with i-variable binding for donkey anaphora resolution altogether, deriving covariance via s-(ituation)-variable binding. However, they still assume that d-pronouns contain descriptive content, while remaining somewhat vague with regard to what the content exactly is. I will clarify this point of vagueness, discussing examples of d-pronouns with multiple antecedents as well as ambiguous donkey-sentences. I will show that postulating descriptive content in d-pronouns is A) not necessary and B) problematic. I. Evans/Cooper proposal: it = “the donkey owned by himx” II. Elbourne/Büring proposal: it = “thes donkey” III. Present proposal: it = “thes entity” I thus argue that d-pronouns are void of descriptive content. This has interesting consequences for the theory of situations.

Singular Donkey Pronouns Are Semantically Singular

A certain prima facie implausible idea about the semantics of donkey pronouns has found a surprising number of adherents (Davies 1981, Lappin 1989, Neale 1990, Lappin and Francez 1994, Yoon 1994, 1996, Krifka 1996a) and even crept into a textbook (Larson and Segal 1995).1 According to this idea, syntactically singular donkey pronouns like it in (1) are semantically numberless, so that (2) provi...

No i-Sums for Nissim (and Shalom)

Lappin and Francez (1994) present a theory of donkey anaphora which, they claim, captures both their existential and their universal readings, while maintaining a uniform representation of donkey pronouns. This paper shows that their analysis does not in fact assign the correct truth conditions to donkey sentences and so does not account correctly for the distribution of readings. An alternativ...

Constraints on Donkey Pronouns

This paper reports on an experimental study of donkey pronouns, pronouns (e.g. it) whose meaning covaries with that of a non-pronominal noun phrase (e.g. a donkey) even though they are not in a structural relationship that is suitable for quantifier-variable binding. We investigate three constraints, (i) the preference for the presence of an overt NP antecedent that is not part of another word,...

Donkey Anaphora: the View from Sign Language (ASL and LSF)*

There are two main approaches to the problem of donkey anaphora (e.g. If John owns a donkey, he beats it). Proponents of dynamic approaches take the pronoun to be a logical variable, but they revise the semantics of quantifiers so as to allow them to bind variables that are not within their syntactic scope. Older dynamic approaches took this measure to apply solely to existential quantifiers; r...

Two kinds of definites in numeral classifier languages

Numeral classifier languages are shown to distinguish definite noun phrases licensed by uniqeness from those licensed by familiarity. Unique definites are expressed by bare nouns, while familiar definites are expressed by indexicals such as demonstrative descriptions or pronouns. This generalization parallels the observation by Schwarz (2009) that German distinguishes unique versus familiar or ...
